I don’t know about you, but I always try to choose the safest and most natural products for my children… so why am I directly putting something toxic on my body every day? Did you know that several studies have found that aluminum may contribute to the formation of certain types of cancers and Alzheimer’s disease. My mom died at an early age due to breast cancer in her lymph nodes, so I need to be extra cautious of anything that could be carcinogenic.
I have been using aluminum filled deodorant for YEARS! Why? My deodorant has been super effective, and it has stopped all levels of sweat or smell. I have a very sensitive sense of smell, so the last thing I want to be is smelly. I have tried so many brands of natural deodorant that didn’t end up working, so I have always given up and gone back to my aluminum ridden deodorant.
Over the past few months, I have done more research on the effects of Aluminum, which have inspired me to take these switch seriously, and give it another try.
From reading more about switching to a natural deodorant, I read that there is an aluminum detox process that could take up to 4 weeks! Did you know that aluminum in antiperspirant is designed to clog and shrink your sweat glands. Our armpits are designed to sweat and release toxins, so by clogging our pores, we are not allowing them to breathe and remove all of the toxicity!
If you want to switch to an aluminum free deodorant, your body needs up to 4 weeks to adjust in order for your glands to function the way they are intended to. When I used natural deodorant in the past, I only tried it a few days before I gave up. Needless to say, a few days clearly was not enough time to remove the 20 years of aluminum buildup from the clinical strength deodorant I was using. Once you detox the aluminum (and other chemicals you deodorant may have), your body will function properly and you should just need a natural, basic deodorant.
To get you through the detox process, I wanted to share some tips given from the Kopari Website:
“How to Survive the Antiperspirant Detox:
Exfoliate your pits – Since commercial antiperspirant deodorants leave a sticky chemical residue on the skin, start by exfoliating with Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub to buff away dead skin cells and residue.
Pit mask – Clay masks that contain bentonite or kaolin are known to be super detoxifying and can also be used in the armpit area for the same effect.
Sweat it out – Working out, steam rooms or dry saunas will really help you sweat out all those toxins and speed up the process.
Drink water – Drinking water will stimulate the lymphatic system and this will help flush your body and detox even quicker.
Wipe, then swipe – You may want to keep some baby wipes handy to freshen up those pretty little pits through the day during the detox process. Then simply re-apply Coconut Deodorant.
Although the switch from an antiperspirant to a clean deodorant may seem intimidating, we promise your bod will thank you! Think about it: you get to purge your pits of years of toxins, help get your underarms function how they should, AND smell like sweet coconut milk while you’re at it. Sounds like a win-win (& win). So now that you know, empower your pits and make the switch to an aluminum-free deodorant. Glide on and go get em, girl!”
Now that you know about the detoxification process you will go through, you just need to pick a deodorant. All bodies are different, which is why there are so many different formulations and brands out there. Here are some I have tried:
Kopari Coconut Deodorant $14. It smells sooooo fresh and clean with a very light coconut milk scent. This is the most recent deodorant I have tried, and I really like it so far. It goes on super smooth and translucent, it’s coconut oil based and formulated without parabens, phthalates or triclosan. Click here for $10 off your Kopari purchase
Schmidts Lavender & Sage– 2 pack for $14.95* and Free Prime Shipping. This is what I used before I discovered Kopari. It also smells really clean and like essential oils. (not “Hippie” smelling though) If you use this kind, make sure to hold it on your armpit until it warms the product up, so it will glide on smoothly.
Schmidt’s Lavender for Sensitive Skin- $10.99* and free Prime Shipping.

Have you had any experience with these or any other natural deodorants? I would love to hear your feedback!
